A day before National Homeownership Month begins, Mayor Percy Bland is inviting residents to consider buying a home.
“What we’re trying to do is raise awareness to our citizens who are either renting a home or renting an apartment,” said Bland.
The city is hosting a housing initiative expo tomorrow at the Frank Cochran Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“If they’re spending between $450 to $800 a month on rent, they can own a home, and we want them to own a home,” said Bland.
Realtors, Habitat for Humanity, local banks, and other resources will be available to help residents transition from renting or leasing to home ownership.
“Basically, at the end of the day, the American dream is to go into home ownership. That’s what we want to provide. We’re going to have some partners here to talk to them even if their credit is not where they want it,” said Bland.
He explained the benefits of owning versus renting.
“You build up equity in something that you own. When you rent or lease you continue to pay someone else monthly, and you never build up equity. How you build up equity is how you build up wealth.”
