Meridian, MS - The 186th Air Refueling Wing has dedicated a street Key Field in honor of the late Brig. Gen. Sam Forbert, Jr.
General Forbert was a long-time resident of Meridian, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Corps, U.S. Air Force and Mississippi Air National Guard.
Forbert’s career began in 1942 during World War II, and he served as wing commander of the 186th Air Refueling Wing from 1970-1978.
“He had a significant impact, as we started out, we were a squadron, then we moved to a group and now we’re a wing. He’s a part of that heritage, he’s a great advocate for that, and we’re proud to be able to do that, and be able to name a street after him.” - Colonel Joe Reid: 186th Aerial Refueling Wing
“His life was the military, and when he couldn’t serve actively, he was here at the Air National Guard, and served until he retired in 78.” - Leslie Carruth: General Forbert's granddaughter
General Forbert died December of 2022 at age 99.
