Meridian, MS - While having fun and celebrating the holidays is important, Lauderdale County Sheriff-Elect Ward Calhoun emphasizes making the right decision against drinking and driving. “If you end up behind the wheel, end up getting stopped, or having a motor vehicle crash, we’re talking about a substantial amount of dollars that are going to be coming out of your pocket. Not to mention the pain and suffering that could be caused to others and yourself.”
Sheriff Calhoun also stated that they are out doing sobriety checkpoints, to maintain safe traveling for the holiday season. “As you approach a checkpoint, make sure you pull up, be observant of the deputies out in the roadway, as well as the other vehicles that are there, and be ready and prepared to present your driver's license to them.”
Twin States News found out in person just what a DUI Stop consists of. “They’ll come and administer a test, make a determination about whether or not in their judgment a person’s ability to operate that motor vehicle or that they’re impaired.”
As Driving under the influence can lead to arrest, Sherrif-Elect Ward expressed the importance of making the right choice. “It’s imperative the motoring public thinks through what they’re going to do, and make sure they don’t operate a motor vehicle while impaired.”
As people prepare to get together and celebrate the holiday season, officials say to remember if you do drink; have a designated driver, or stay put where you are.
