High school students from Calvary Christian school took a break from class and visited Love’s Kitchen to serve those in need of a warm meal.
“Today we’re giving back to our community by doing something we call Cares Day. But it’s really not about earning community service, it’s about giving back to our community and helping out the people that are less fortunate than we are,” said Timothy Hill, a 12th grade student.
Each year students at Calvary Christian school participate in a service project that is designed to help build their character.
“Instead of just always trying to get something, just take some time out of your day just to come down and help out, and help with people that sometimes don’t even know when the next meal will come and don’t even have a bed to sleep in at night sometimes,” said Hill.
By participating in today’s event, students learned that giving back can be rewarding.
“It feels nice because some people aren’t as blessed as others and when you’re blessed you should give some of your blessings away and share your talents that God gave you,” said Blaine Brown, a 9th grade student.
Love’s Kitchen’s Executive Director, Fannie Johnson, said she appreciated the students’ support.
“We couldn’t survive without the help of the community. Different groups of adults and kids always come out and help us. And the kids that come out help, it tells us that we have a bright future because the kids are already giving.”
