Go Green Meridian welcomes the community to its 3rd annual food plant sale at Earth’s Bounty on Saturday, May 7th from 8 am to 12 pm.
“This is our big fundraiser of the year. All of our seeds are heirloom varieties and non-gmo qualities.”
A self-funded organization, Go Green Meridian raises money to further its mission to teach others how to grow food responsibly and organically, and to support community gardens.
“We support the love and peas community garden, the meridian freedom project garden, and the greater allen chapel community garden. So we have to raise money to pay the water, and buy seeds, and soil, and tools.”
Wilkes explains there are many benefits of people growing their own food.
“It’s expensive to buy food. Food is expensive. Growing your own food is free; that’s one key reason. Knowing where your food comes from, what you're consuming, what you’re buying, i think is incredibly important. And just being aware of what’s going on in the world. Food coming in from Mexico is not often the safest food in the world.”
At earth’s bounty, Go Green Meridian will be selling over 600 plants, each for either $2.00 or
$5.00.
“So we have like 12 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, heirloom peppers, eggplants, hot peppers, lemon grass, holy basil, cooking basil, so it’s a wide variety. And we grow very unusual things, stuff that you wouldn’t find locally anywhere else.”
