For those who know; the Lauderdale county department of archives and history can be a treasure trove for history enthusiasts with plenty of historic pieces to whet the appetite of any Indiana Jones wanna-be.
Director for the department Ward Calhoun spends his days trying to document the history of meridian and Lauderdale county.
Today; he works on details concerning two Jewish cemeteries in meridian.
Calhoun says that years ago the Jewish community thrived in meridian. He says that the grave sites are reminders of what they did for the Lauderdale county and the city and because of this; learning that history is important.
All genealogy research is similar but also present unique challenges. As is the case with this project according to Calhoun. However, he adds that they do know some things about the people buried in the cemetery.
