Meridian Community College is helping residents prepare for their future by going to college. Yesterday the college held an information session at the Meridian Lauderdale County Public Library.
The session provided information to high school students applying to college for the first time, as well as adults who hope to go back to school.
For high school students, taking the SAT and ACT is important.
“They need to take the ACT, get as high as they can on the ACT. An 18 is great, 17 is great, but if you really want to be competitive, I would say over a 21 because that’s when a lot of the scholarships start,” said MCC College Recruiter Adrian Cross.
They also need to maintain a high GPA.
“Of course we know that if you have a GPA of less than 2.0, you cannot get federal scholarships, nor can you get institutional scholarships. So if your GPA is low, be sure that you take one or two classes that are going to get it back up so that you can get financial aid,” said Cross.
Cross added that high school students need a resume that exhibits their extracurricular activities and community service as well. She explained that for non-traditional students, having a long-term plan is key.
“I always, always, always encourage them to figure out what they want to do long-term. If you think about what you want to do long-term, something that you like to do, it will be a lot easier to learn the information when you get to college, process the information when you’re getting done with college, and finding a job.”
Cross said that MCC welcomes all students and is making it easier for them to attend classes.
“We have online classes that start in August, September, and October. So if you’re not able to come in August, don’t count yourself out. We still have late start in term two. We also have evening classes that start in August, September, and October. We also have weekend classes for our nursing programs.”
