The Choctaw Area of the Boy Scouts of America invites families to “Rocket Into Scouting” and sign up for the Scout program this Saturday at Northeast Lauderdale Middle School.
“We just came up with the idea of doing the rockets because boys are liking the rocket theme. So we came up with the idea to let them build a rocket and be able to shoot it off,” said Rodney Forbis, the district executive of the Choctaw Area Council.
The hope is to recruit more Cub and Boy scouts.
“Right now in the Choctaw Area Council we reach out to about 1,300 boys. We’re hoping to grow that to well over 2,000 boys,” said Forbis.
He explained that the Scout program prepares boys for life.
“We teach those points of the Scout Law. There are 12 points: a scout is loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”
He added that an important part of Scouting is learning the value of service.
“This weekend we had a pack go out and drum up donations for pet supplies so that they could send to the flood relief in Baton Rouge for the pets that have been displaced. It’s kind of neat to see young men, I’m talking first through fourth grade young men, developing that sense of urgency to help somebody else, somewhere else.”
The “Rocket Into Scouting” event starts at 10 am. If you can’t make it this Saturday, the Choctaw Area of the Boys Scouts will host another “Rocket Into Scouting” event in Meridian on October 1st.
