The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that happened yesterday around 10:45 p.m. on Whippoorwill Road off of Highway 19. Deputies responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call reporting the sound of gunshots.
“Deputies arrived to find two individuals that had been shot. One of the individuals has since died as a result of her injuries. Her name was Christa Marie White. She’s a 31-year-old white female who resided in that area,” said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun III.
“The body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy to find out exactly what organs had punctured, and to possibly be able to match up the bullet with the gun forensics,” said Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler.
The other victim, a man, is a being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition. The sheriff’s department says the two victims knew each other, but the nature of their relationship is unclear.
“Based upon our investigation at this time, we do not believe this was a random act of violence. We believe that in some form or fashion, someone had some reason to target her and the other victim in this particular incident,” said Calhoun.
So far, several members of the community have come forward with information.
“We would ask anyone else that lives in that area, that last night might have seen anything, even though you think it may be something very small but may be important to our investigation, that you contact the sheriff’s department,” said Calhoun.
