Raising kids can be tough these days. But Weems Community Mental Health Center and Meridian Community College hope to make the job a bit easier. The two are hosting a parenting seminar next Thursday at the Tommy E. Dulaney Center.
“When we as parents try to address issues with our children, maybe we’re sometimes guessing. So, we’re going to talk about what’s normal and what’s not normal, and talk about some of the common symptoms we see in children and try to give parents tools that they can use to address these things,” said Dr. Lee Marlow, a Weems licensed psychologist.
The seminar is free and open to all and is designed for those who live and work with children, such as parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, and childcare providers.
The seminar will highlight some of the best parenting practices, as well as those that aren’t ideal.
“Some of the best strategies is being consistent and being predictable. We know that even if kids are in a more chaotic environment, if it’s a predictable environment, their outcomes are a lot better,” said Marlow.
It will also discuss how parenting has changed over the years, and how to raise children in today's world.
“Think back to different generations. The role of having children was to have more workers on the farm, and you prepared them for the future, which was to inherit the farm. Now we have different colleges and careers and opportunities and we push our kids to succeed in the future, when we don’t even know what the future holds,” said Marlow.
