The Lauderdale County Courthouse is encouraging everyone to be drug free. Today the courthouse held a drug awareness ceremony to kick off Red Ribbon Week.
Residents came out to honor those who are struggling with or have lost their battle with substance abuse.
“I lost everything. I lost everything and broke the laws and I’m suffering the consequences. I’m in drug court right now,” said Harlie Haskins.
“I’m in drug court as well. I’m going to church three times a week. I’m going to recovery meetings. Everything is looking up for me ever since I quit drugs,” said Charlene Farrington.
“I would like to say to anyone who is down on their knees with any kind of grief or trouble to not turn to drugs and alcohol, to turn to God. He’s the one that will get us through it all,” said Leroyn Wyatt.
The ceremony included NAS jets flying overhead and residents wrapping red ribbon around the
courthouse. Later during the week, court officials will spread the drug-free message by traveling to schools and teaching students to “just say no.”
“We will be going through the elementary schools this week and honoring students who have participated in different contests, awarding them different prizes,” said Lauderdale County Youth and Drug Court Judge, Veldore Young-Graham.
“We teach them how to say no and reasons they can give for saying no. We also teach them the effects of drugs. If you know what it will do to you, hopefully, you’ll be more apt to say no,” said Lauderdale County D.A.R.E Officer, Jared Woodall.
