Lauderdale County Relay for Life is ready to get moving and help fight cancer at this year’s walking fundraiser. The event will take place April 28th from 6 pm to midnight on MCC’s soccer field.
“We’ll have outdoor activities for kids, cooking stations, and a lot of good food. This is the best place to come on Friday and get food for Relay for Life. We’re just trying to stamp out cancer in our lifetime. We’ve made great strides in Lauderdale County, the number one relay team in Mississippi. We intend to increase that by leaps and bounds,” said Logistics Coordinator Bo Hawkins.
Relay for Life started in 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington. His purpose was to raise money for the American Cancer Society to help fight cancer.
“In the last few years until last year, we didn’t have the track. Getting back to the track at mcc has meant a lot to a lot of different people. We’re excited about walking this track, and we’re going to have some contests about who walks the track the most,” said Event Lead Cathy Raley.
Lauderdale County Relay for Life hopes to exceed its fundraising goal of $255,000. All funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. There’s still time to sign up.
“Anybody can form a relay team. Any group of people can get together, form a team, and come in.
We’ll tell you what you have to do and walk you through the entire process. You don’t have to be a cancer patient or cancer survivor. If you just want to help out, you can form a team to fundraise for relay.”
There will be a Relay for Life team captain meeting on Thursday starting at 5:30 pm in the Mississippi Power auditorium.
