Students, faculty, and staff did quite a bit of walking today at Meridian Community College.
“We’re looking to try to help people see where they are right now with their fitness and wellness, and hopefully to get even better with that,” said Director Chair of Science and Wellness Valerie Bishop.
The college hosted its annual Walk for Wellness event.
“We have lots of other activities for them today. We’re doing a yoga class, a cardio class,” said Bishop.
After walking a few laps around the track, participants traveled to booths to learn information about how to live a healthy lifestyle.
“We’re here because MCC is going to be tabacco-free starting May 1st. What we have to offer is a lot of tobacco cessation information, such as ways that people can quit, stay quit, and general information about how it affects your family through secondhand smoking,” said Beverly Hearn, who works at Greater Meridian Health Clinic.
“I just walked around, got my blood pressure checked, got my body fat checked. I also got some information on organ donors,” said MCC student Keith Turnipseed.
With Mississippi having one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation, Bishop explained that MCC is trying to help students create healthy habits while young.
“We want all of our students to be healthy. We think an educated student is going to learn better when they’re healthy, fit, eating right, sleeping right, and being mindful of what they’re doing with their bodies right now. Hopefully that’ll make a better and healthier overall individual.”
