Library hosts back-to-school fundraiser

Schools let out for the summer a week ago, but the Meridian Lauderdale County Public Library is already prepping for when classes start back in the fall.

“We just want to prepare the children for when they get back to school. Some of them may be less fortunate and they can’t afford pencils and pens. We just want to be a great help to those children because we believe education is important,” said Public Services Supervisor Emma Boyd.

The library is having a kids’ summer reading program.

“Reading will help stimulate their minds and just keep them focused while they’re on their summer breaks,” said Boyd.

It’s also having a back-to-school fundraiser. Residents are encouraged to stop by and donate school supplies.

“Pens, papers, crayons, scissors, and rulers. Just the basics of what they would need in a classroom setting,” said Boyd.

The supplies can be dropped off at the designated area in the front lobby.

The library will be taking donations through July 31st. On August 1st, the library will give away the school supplies at a luau party.

“We’re going to dress up that day. We’re going to have the grass skirts on. We’re going to try to block off one of the streets here in meridian. We just want to send them off with a big bang and party to get them excited about going to back to school,” said Boyd.
