School may be out, but the lunch line is still open at Meridian Public Schools.
“We have our salads today. We have hamburgers and fries, which is a favorite for the children. We also have chicken and rice,” said Louis McPhee, the food service director of Meridian Public Schools.
During June and July, the school district is cooking up free meals to ensure that no child goes hungry this summer.
“We’ve opened up several of our locations in the district for children to come and eat. We also have some other sites that feed the children during the summer,” said McPhee.
The Summer Food Service Program is being funded by the USDA, which funds school food programs during the school year. West Hills Elementary School, Magnolia Middle School, and Meridian High School are just a couple of schools whose doors are open.
“We consider our school locations safe zones for children. Parents and children know that this is a safe place for them to come,” said McPhee.
The Summer Food Service Program serves meals to up to 1,200 kids a day. Breakfast is from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and lunch is from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Parents can even eat with their kids for a small fee.
“This is something in their routine that they can continue during the summer months up until school starts,” said McPhee.
