City prepares for Fourth of July Celebration

Chelsea Jones

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Independence Day, why not join the City of Meridian?

“Just come and bring the family. Bring your lawn chairs and come and enjoy an old fashioned Fourth of July,” said Laura Carmichael, the city’s cultural affairs coordinator.

The city’s Fourth of July festivities will take place at Bonita Lakes Park on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

“At 4:00 we have food vendors and other vendors who will begin selling great food, barbecue, hotdogs, everything you can imagine for the fourth,” said Carmichael.

The city is expecting anywhere from 5,000 to 6,000 people to show up.

Yesterday, it was rainy at Bonita Lakes. Hopefully all the rain will have cleared away by Tuesday, but the show will go on even if it’s raining. Just as long as it isn’t lightening.

Shuttle service from Bonita Lakes Mall near Tuesday Morning will begin at 5:30. Parking will also be available on the lake.

“At 6:30 we get the bandstand kicked off with our national anthem. We’ll have a flyover. We’ll kick off the band at 7:00. This year we have Musical Fantasy, a 10-memner group that will be onstage providing anything from big band to hip hop to classics to patriotic music,” said Carmichael.

The main attraction of the evening will be saved for last.

“The fireworks spectacular kicks off at 9:00 and it will be over the lake. Everybody always looks forward to that every year because it’s just such a spectacular show. Our parks and recreation department do a great job of putting that together. It’s just a fun time for everybody,” said Carmichael.

The Fourth of July celebration is free to the public. The stage will be seat up near the boating area at Bonita Lakes Park. Food vendors will be located on the lower and upper lake.
