MCC offers writing refresher course through English Summer Bridge Program

Chelsea Jones

For first-timers headed to college, or the simply those wanting to return to the classroom, MCC is starting its English Summer Bridge Program on Monday.

“Those students who have tested into developmental English in the fall, this is a really good opportunity for them to skip that class and be able to go straight into composition one in the fall, so that saves them an entire semester in a developmental course and it also saves them money,” said Lisa Rhodes, one of the instructors.

It’s a two-week remedial program that goes over the basics of grammar and essay writing. MCC began offering it last year.

“I was not happy with my act score. I felt that I needed help and that was just the best help for me to get,” said Angelica Killen, who’s entering her second year at MCC.

The program is also for community members hoping to brush up on knowledge.

“My mom decided to take the class because she is also getting a degree to go be a teacher herself.

She needed a refresher course in English and grammar and writing and everything else about English. It was great to be able to compete with here over something that we both needed,” said Killen.

Due to the David Quave grant, the program is entirely free, everything from books, to pens. Classes are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. To noon. Spots are still available. To sign up, all you have to do is visit MCC’s website.

“Don’t think, just do it. It’s the best choice you can make. There’s some great teachers that I know you will love,” said Killen.
