Parents looking to save a few bucks on back-to-school clothes and shoes can do so this Friday. Shoppers can buy qualifying items without paying a state sales tax.
“This is a great opportunity to be able to save some money, but also get those items you need for the beginning of the school year,” said EMBDC Events Coordinator Casey Holladay.
The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends at 12:00 midnight on Saturday.
Tax-free items only include clothes and shoes that are less than $100. That’s $100 per individual item, not the total. For instance, if you wanted to buy a shirt that was $50, a pair of pants that were $75, and a pair of shoes that were $120, you would only pay tax on the shoes since they go over the $100 threshold.
Holladay said the EMBDC is encouraging residents to shop local.
“Anytime that you shop local and support the businesses here, it’s very important. It supports not only the EMBDC membership, but it supports the members of the community, people who live, work, and play here.”
Bonita Lakes Mall is already preparing for the anticipated large crowds.
“I’m going to be shopping for my son. I spend about $500 in him. That’s not even counting taxes. So, if we can take a lot of that out, I’m looking to spend around $300 this time,” said Darnell Brown, a Meridian resident.
