Water rates set to increase

Chelsea Jones

City officials say residents can expect to see an increase in water rates. Currently, the minimum bill for water utilities is $28.96 per month, which includes sewer and garbage fees. Officials say the increased rates will ensure city compliance with the EPA’s Clean Water Act. They say the hike is also due to higher electricity rates.

“When your electrical rates go up at your house, then the electrical rates at the facility or plant, they also go up. The cost of materials, everything. So, there is going to be a moderate increase just to keep up with inflation,” said Public Works Director Hugh Smith.

Officials say city engineers are working with contractual attorneys to see how water rates should be adjusted. They say water rates will be increased incrementally.
