Residents in Clarke County may soon vote on whether alcohol is sold inside the county. According to Clark County Circuit Clerk Beth Jordan, two separate petitions are going around—one supporting the sale of beer and wine and another to sell liquor. In the past, any efforts to turn Clarke into a “wet county” have failed— many say due to residents being afraid to sign a petition, fearing repercussions from church leaders. Jordan said the petition to sell alcohol requires 1,500 signatures to call an election, while the beer and wine petition requires 2,500, or 20 percent of registered voters. If the required number of signatures is reached, residents will vote on the issues on November 7.
