MCC nominated for national award

Chelsea Jones

Meridian Community College is once again receiving national attention for its commitment to educating students. The college has been nominated for the prestigious Aspen Institute’s Prize for Excellence.

“I think this is the third or fourth time MCC has been nominated for the award, so we’re very proud,” said MCC President Dr. Scott Elliot.

Only the top 150 community colleges in the nation are eligible to compete this award. MCC was one of nine Mississippi community colleges to be nominated.

“Our motto is start, finish, graduate at MCC. We believe as a culture it’s important to finish what you start. It’s a good mindset to have throughout your life. A college degree is something that can never be taken away from you,” said Elliot.

The winner of the award will receive $1 million. In choosing a winner, the Aspen Institute will look at a community college’s outcomes such as graduation rate, how students perform after matriculation to four-year universities, and how well they do in the workplace.

“We have 52 different career and technical programs ranging from commercial truck driving to nursing and everything in between, so you have a lot of great career options at MCC,” said Elliot.

He added that MCC plans to continue its track record of high achievement.

“This institution has been known for academic excellence for a long time. I’m just proud to have worked with faculty and staff who have upheld that tradition through the years.”
