In Lauderdale County, Lauderdale County Emergency Management is teaming up with the city of Meridian, the Meridian Fire Department and the Lauderdale County Fire Department to Distribute Masks to Community Residents.
Yesterday, it was announced that this week that MEMA delivered PPE to all 82 counties in the state, and to the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. MEMA also distributed around 2.25 million masks through the community mask program, and 500,000 of those masks were made in Mississippi.
On a local level, 25,000 cloth and N95 masks will be passed out throughout the city of Meridian and Lauderdale County on Saturday May 30th beginning at 9am-noon or until supplies run out.
In the county masks will be distributed at Clarkdale Attendance Center, Southeast Highschool, West Lauderdale Elementary, and Northeast Middle School.
In the city the masks will be distributed at Oakland Heights School, Crestwood School, Velma Young Community Center and the Frank Cochran Center.
“We just ask people to be patient with us, there may be long lines. People may show up before the time, but we’re trying to hand these masks out at exactly 9 o’clock. We want the people to stay inside their vehicles, only roll your window down temporarily to receive the masks, we’re going to have our masks on, our people will have gloves on in the city, to hand these out. These masks are individually wrapped so there will be no cross contamination with the masks itself”, said Doug Stephens, Meridian Public Safety Director.
“Tomorrow evening we will post exactly what the layouts are going to be, what the traffic route is going to be sent out over NIXLE. So, if you haven’t signed up for our NIXLE announcements, to do that you simply text your zip code to 888777 and that will sign you up to our NIXLE notifications”, said Odie Barrett, LEMA Director.
They will be limiting the distribution to 4 masks per vehicle or household.
