EVERYONE LOVES AN UNDERDOG REDEMPTION STORY. TWIN STATES NEWS DANNY TODD SPEAKS WITH THE NEWTON COUNTY SOCCER TEAM ON WHAT THE USA’S MEN’S SOCCER TEAM ADVANCING IN THE WORLD CUP MEANS TO THEM.
The US men's national soccer team putting its mark on the World Cup. This has sparked the attention of a local high school that says it's inspired their students and players to not give up. No matter what the circumstance may be.
KAYLEE AVANT- PLAYER says "I'm made to play to their speed. Play out of the back, and there's different ways to play, more ways to attack, and more ways to score."
SARA THOMPSON- SOCCER COACH added "I guess it's just always exciting to watch the games like last night's game when we thought it was coming down to the wire and, they had to win, they couldn't tie, and the other team was like really getting some shots off and everything. My little girl was gripping my leg and I was very nervous about it."
Newton County soccer coach Sarah Thompson believes the U.S. women's team has been a proven staple in national soccer. But having the men do so well in the World Cup inspired her boys to be able to follow along and cheer them on.
LYLE HOLLINGSWORTH: soccer player says "They're doing really well right now for being such a young team. It really inspires me to see them go this far. It makes me want to try harder to be able to maybe one day be out there with them on the field of play to represent my country."
SARA THOMPSON added "And that just means a lot to get to see your country fight through and dig deep and be successful because it gives your kids that belief that anything can happen no matter if you're the underdog. That happens all the time in high school soccer."
The underdog aspect of this story is what Thompson feels is most impactful. She stresses this at every game. No matter how you think your opponent will play, it's important to bring your very best no matter what.
HELEN SANCHEZ- PLAYER says "It’s like, giving me inspiration. Maybe I could be there one day. Hopefully, we will win."
Coach SARA THOMPSON says "It just shows that it really doesn't matter what you're ranked, what people think you can do, that success can always happen if you believe in yourself.
The coach feels that believing is the main factor in being successful, and Thompson looks forward to the impact. The success of the U.S. men's soccer team on and off the field has on her players.
BRIAN SANCHEZ a player, says "World Cup, Conner Gav, I love watching them play, I feel inspired to play hard for my country and hopefully one day I get to play with them."
