Anderson Regional Medical Center CIS physicians are now using a new lithotripsy balloon by Shockwave Medical to treat a disease (PAD) that affects more than 12 million people. Twin States News spoke with the first Anderson Regional doctor to operate with the new technology.

Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Zaid Altheeb successfully operated with the new shock wave technology at the beginning of August:
“So, the first time we used it was this month we got an excellent result. The patients are happy with having this device here because that will prevent sending the patients for major surgeries. We are actually looking toward having this device to use soon in the heart for those blockages that are chronic and difficult to treat", stated Dr. Altheeb.

The new lithotripsy technology could potentially decrease the chance of other surgeries for patients.
“Sometimes we have difficulties with the patients in terms of crossing those blockages, placing a balloon, or putting in a stent. Sometimes we have to refer the patients to go for bypass surgery. So, this device actually smooths the build-up inside the arterial walls, makes it easier for us to place the stent, and improves the circulation of the blood flow.”

With receiving the new Shockwave technology, Anderson's Cath lab is now on a more advanced level.
“So, every device that has shown that it is effective, it is cost-effective, it is useful in our patients will make our service here much better and the quality of care for our patients would definitely be improved by having those devices in our cath lab" says Dr. Altheeb.
