The Mississippi Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the coronavirus food assistance program through August 28th.
Farmers who were greatly impacted financially by the coronavirus have the opportunity to receive aid from the federal government.
Farmers and ranchers have lost crops and euthanized animals due to COVID-19 shutting everything down, leaving them without being able to sell their goods.
Farmer Jeff Davis says he’s been impacted heavily due to the fact he runs a cattle farm.
“Cattle prices have declined probably about 25 to 30 percent at the market and I had about twenty that I was going to sell. I planned on selling in early march to mid-March and that’s about the time the market kind of collapsed.”

Due to declined sales, Davis was forced to sell the cattle back.
“I had them for a good while, trying to see what the market would do and I was somewhat forced to sell them back in early May. They did really better when I sold them than I thought they would. Yes, it’s been a challenge and it’s been a struggle.”
For those who have hit a price decline of 5% or more, or have lost supplies due to the pandemic are eligible for one aid payment.
“The CAFP help is good. It’s a little bit, not a lot, but every little bit helps and there’s going to be a limit to what the government spends trying to build the economy out on this COVID-19 deal.”
