Meridian MS - Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker at the greater meridian Fellowship of Christian Athletes - 6th annual Jackie Slay “Breakfast of Champions.”
“Pouring into these kids, these athletes, this future of our generation is incredible. And how and what they do. So, any time I get an opportunity for my day to work, to be able to speak on behalf of F.C.A it’s a privilege. Speaking to young athletes that to me that's what I passionate about. F.C.A is just incredible organization and that's a very.”
Smoltz’s speech wasn’t all that took place. Over 30 student-athletes were honored as “champions of character,” also recognized were “coach of the year” and male and female athletes of the year.
Director Dalton Smith explains more about the event. "Breakfast of Champions is one of the biggest events we do. F.C.A is really an opportunity for us to showcase our ministry for all we do on campuses, at school, with coaches and athletes. It's kind of like an award show."
He also shared how the student athletes are selected. "We ask the F.C.A sponsor or their coach to nominate male and female athletes every year from each of our 15 schools, it's a wind up with 30 champions, a character. They're selected and these are students that have played the game the right way."
