Care Lodge to host virtual 26th Annual Conference

Updated: Sep 8, 2020

The Care Lodge of Domestic Violence will host their 26th Annual Conference on interpersonal violence next month via Zoom. This year’s focus for the annual Care Lodge conference is ‘Victims Who Slip Through the Cracks.’ The conference will take place on October 23rd.

“We thought that would be a good theme because a lot of people who attend these conferences might have heard domestic violence 101--what are the signs, what does it look like and what are the different forms of domestic violence, but we rarely hear anything about the cases that fall through the cracks," says Director of Community Engagement Sara Smith.

Smith says domestic violence has picked up during the pandemic.

“We had a lot more than usually that came by or called wanting help with protection orders. So we’ve really changed the way we have tried to provide services and we are able to do virtual meetings right now. We have a YouTube channel and a podcast that helps explain safety and how to fill out a protection order.”

Experts in mental health, social media, law enforcement and domestic violence will share information on how to identify and prevent these situations.

“We will have topics of discussing domestic violence, child abuse, the system and how the system handles this. We’re going to have speakers from Capella University, Mississippi State University, City of Meridian School District and then we have some international speakers. We have to look at those cases with extreme care because their so sensitive.”
