Newton, MS - As N.H. Pilate Middle school and Newton High school have kicked off their Red Ribbon Week Events, Middle School Principal Dr. Jackie McFarland has a challenge for all the students. “I challenge them to be sold out, to saying no to drugs and being drug free.”
One way the schools brought awareness to students was having James Carter of the Carter Foundation in Meridian, come and share his story about choices he made, and how he turned his life around. “It’s cool not to be cool, because sometimes a lot of people feel like they want to be cool because they see what cool look like, and cool could lead them down the wrong path.”
Carter encouraged the students to change their way of thinking with not only drugs, but gangs, and other choices in life.
Seniors, Samaria Jones, Hannah Hardaway, and Jaquari Lindsey expressed how hearing Carter’s story helped them.
“He was telling us, the type of music we listen to kind of influences what we think and how we do stuff so I’m going to try to change the type of music I listen to.” says Jones.
“The tongue is very powerful so I’m going to start changing the way that I speak in some instances.” says Hardaway.
“It was very interesting because as a young man we can relate to what he said, and how we look at drugs and things in our life.” says Lindsey.
N.H. Pilate Middle school and Newton High school say they want to make students aware to say no to drugs and make better choices in life.
