Hispanic Heritage Week was started by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
It was later expanded to a month-long celebration for Hispanic Independence.
Twin State News talked with some Hispanics in Meridian about the true meaning of this holiday.
“We celebrate all heritages. We celebrate each other and our culture. Teach the culture to other people, it's not really just about us but about everybody as a whole,” says Cristal Suarez.
Ms. Cristal Suarez also mentioned that most people aren’t aware that Hispanic countries gained their independence in September, and that they usually think that is the meaning of Cinco De Mayo.
I also asked a loyal customer of San Marco’s Mexican Restaurant what he thinks about the Hispanic Heritage.
Michael Chaney said, “I love the jokes. I love the Spanish language and the sound. They’re very good people. I mean like in any culture, they love life. They love their family, they’re very family-oriented."
