Meridian MS - The students of Meridian Community College had a chance to hear from their peers, and from a guest speaker, about labels, and what makes people different.
Associate dean of student engagement Brandon Dewease explains the focus of the event. “We wanted to raise awareness on the idea that no matter how we’re labeled, we are still able.”
Speaking of still being able, student Jamilah Wansley shares her story of albinism and how she doesn’t let it stop her. "It’s good to let the community know what’s going on. There is nothing wrong with us. Like the title of the event, we are labeled but we are still able to do it."
Former student: and 2023 USA Ms. Arizona Roxanne Alexander was the keynote speaker. She spoke about how she deals with anxiety with the help of her service dog Nash, and what she hopes her speech does for the community. “That they know disabilities can be unseen, just show compassion, be kind, and know that people are struggling internally and don’t have to look a certain way to have a disability.”
The college says they hope students feel motivated and unified after today’s event.
