Today, the Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Meridian, Eddie Kelly, held a press conference regarding the March 27, 2020 arrest of Levi Gibbs.
In a statement last week, evidence reviewed during an internal investigation showed no indication of police brutality had occurred during his arrest.
Two members of the city council reviewed video footage and other evidence of the incident and agreed that Gibbs was resisting arrest. One of the council members, Meridian City Council Vice President Weston Lindemann, has now reconsidered his position and requested additional information.
Gibbs wrote a letter to one of the city council members claiming he was kicked and punched repeatedly in the face.
Kelly says Gibbs was charged by the Meridian Police Department for resisting arrest and two felony possessions of narcotics.
“Correspondents from the Kemper County Sheriff’s Department and the correctional facility both verified that there was no physical trauma to Mr. Gibbs," says Kelly. "The U.S. attorney reviewed the case, in its entirety, and found no evidence in wrong doing. They are proceeding with the federal prosecution in which Mr. Gibbs has been charged.”
At the time of arrest, Mr Gibbs was out on parole and had indictments against him for armed robbery. The Mississippi Department of Corrections served Gibbs at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, where they revoked his probation.
