Merdian City Court is bringing back its community service program to assist those who may not be able to pay back their fines. Twin States News spoke with Judge Dustin Markham, who believes the program could positively impact the community.

Participants will have the option to work with different city departments like Public Works, Parks and Recreations, and even community groups like the ACES.
“This is a way for them to kill two birds with one stone by providing services to the community and receiving credit towards their fines’, said Judge Markham.

In addition to the beautification program, Judge Markham is hoping that through partnerships, the city court will evolve into a resource for the community:
“Whether it is satisfying fines, giving back to the community, or getting help through some of our partnerships. We have a partnership with Weems. We have a partnership with Mute where we help individuals get housing who are homeless or who come here with a drug addiction.”

Instead of wearing the typical jumpsuit or vest that you usually see community service workers in, participants of the program will wear a t-shirt to represent a united community group.
“I want the appearance to be that of a community group because they are going to be helping the community, stated Markham. “I think we alleviate one of those barriers by taking away the jumpsuits, taking away handcuffs, and allowing people to get out and serve their community without being frowned upon by what they are wearing.”
Judge Markham also says that those participating in the activities may see some relief on the coming amnesty day.
