THE MERIDIAN POLICE DEPARTMENT IS REACTING TODAY TO SOME CRITICAL QUESTIONS FROM A CITY COUNCILWOMAN LINDSEY. OUR DANNY TODD REPORTS THAT COUNCILWOMAN TRIED TO RAISE THE QUESTIONS AT LAST NIGHT’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING, BUT WAS DENIED DOING SO.
Meridian City Council meeting yielded some hard questions before the board as it relates to crime in the Queen City. City Councilwoman Lindsey says that she was elected to this seat to get those answers for the people.
Councilwoman Ty Bell Lindsey says "I just want to make sure that the constituents and public do know that the same questions you have. I definitely want to know the answers."
Councilwoman Ty Lindsay says the people she represents in her ward have raised questions about the performance of the police department after some recent shootings and acts of violence in the city. At last night's council meeting, Lindsay tried to present a list of 27 of those questions.
Councilwoman Lindsey, and Board President says "I can admit ya’ll heard it, that I was trying to present two pages of questions."
City Council board President responds "Well, this is. Hold on one second Councilman Lindsay. This is why I'm going to speak out. I must say this and this will be if I can speak on my ward when I have questions or my constitutes has questions, other people in my ward have questions. I have meetings and I have meetings in my ward confirming, to Going to the questions that they want me to ask."
Councilwoman Lindsay stated that she put together this list of questions so that those in her ward who can't attend city council meetings can have a voice. Councilwoman Lindsay says these questions are not intended to cause division. She very much respects the mayor and chief of police and wants these questions to produce a solution to the problem, not create more problems.
Councilwoman Lindsey says "I just want to make sure that they know that we are going to do whatever it takes to get their questions answered. It’s very important to me. That's the reason why I was elected to be put in this seat. So whatever it takes. (applause) Thank you."
Meridian Police Chief Deborah Young did reach out to Twin States News today to respond to the questions about the department that were put together by Councilwoman Lindsay. The chief was not able to attend the meeting due to a prior scheduled appointment, and she has not seen the questions, but she wanted to release a statement that despite the recent shootings, there is not a rise in crime in Meridian compared to last year.
