COVID-19 Cases continue to Spike in Mississippi

As of June 11th, 608 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported by the Mississippi Department of Health. A number of 13 new deaths have been confirmed in the state, with Lauderdale County being one of those deaths.

Lauderdale County now has a total of 801 cases and 75 deaths of COVID-19.

Dr. Thomas Dobbs explains that cases are slowly transitioning more to younger people.

“Other metrics of where we are as a state, we do see continuing growth and transmission. We do see a transition from an older, middle age age group to younger individuals who are being diagnosed. We are also seeing additional strains on our health system.”

He also states younger people are being infected by the virus through not social distancing properly.

“It does concern us very much that it’s these things happening in the community, social events and people gathering in ways that are unwise that are driving this. One of the scenarios that we’re seeing over and over again is we are seeing young individuals going out to parties, hanging out with friends, things that don’t even meet the criteria under the executive order.”

MSDH is actively working with doctors and hospitals to identify cases as quickly as possible. To view daily updates of COVID-19, visit msdh.ms.gov.
