Meridian, MS - Although the past couple of days brought rain to the area, a fire weather warning is in effect until 8 pm for portions of Mississippi. Lauderdale County being one.
“Some people had a half inch, three quarters of an inch of rain, but it was so dry that the ground soaked that up quickly.” says Greg Chatham
Greg Chatham is the Deputy Director for Lauderdale County Emergency Services and encourages people to use caution, as dry temperatures make anything more prone to fire. “Like if you’re hauling equipment or whatever, double check your chains, your binders, your ramps, cause right now a lot of things that normally wouldn’t start a fire, will.”
He also feels as it gets closer to hunting season, an increase in activity is another thing to be mindful of. “There’s more activity in the forest, and there’s more activity out in the wooded areas, and anytime you increase activity you increase the likely hood of having a fire. You know exhaust, mufflers, catalytic converters, chainsaws, anything like that, so just be extra mindful when it’s this dry.”
Deputy Director Greg Chatham says that people still need to be cautious, as anything can start a fire with how dry the weather has been.
