Day of Service

Lauderdale County School District teamed up with Miss Mississippi for a “Service Day” in efforts to help meet the needs of local senior citizens and widows.

The first site was at the home of, Sue Gruno, who loves to garden, but since her surgery has not been able to do so. Northeast high school's Navy JROTC students helped Gruno pull weeds and replace mulch in her yard.

Gruno says the help from the students felt more like Christmas.

“I was ill from the surgery, but I was even more ill that I couldn’t plant my flowers”, said Sue. “To have this group come and weed my flowers is just wonderful.”

The school district’s idea for the day of service was inspired by Miss Mississippi’s, Holly Brand, platform of volunteerism. Brand was also on the site to help and says that her title is more than just wearing the crown.

“Service is really important to me and giving back in even the smallest way is going to be fun”, said Holly “I’ve always liked helping people so being able to actually get down and do the dirty work is important for the mission of Miss America and helps to break down those pageant stereotypes.”

Navy JROTC’S Commanding Officer, Brandan Stevens, was excited that his team and himself were able to come out and bring a smile to the homeowner.

“Feels really good to come out and help the community, especially seeing all my guys around helping out. It made her day when we got here so it’s making us feel really good”- Brandon Stevens

Students from the school district along with Miss Mississippi will visit six worksites that are spread out throughout Lauderdale County in an effort to continue giving service to the community.
