Meridian, MS - Deer hunters in Mississippi need to be aware of the Chronic Wasting Disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that CWD is a progressive, fatal disease that affects the brain, spinal cord, and many other tissues in deer.
According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, this disease can be very harmful if consumed.
Local deer hunters share their opinions on how they feel about checking for CWD.
“I feel that everyone needs to keep safety first, and it doesn’t take a whole lot of time just to go ahead and have the deer checked before you consume any meat,” said Charlie Black.
Jerry Dunn's message was quite clear, “I would take your deer to a processor and make sure it is safe to eat.”
Another deer hunter, Will McClendon, expresses how he feels about the CWD situation.
“If it’s one of those things that can be harmful you know to myself or during consumption, then that would be something that I would be looking into myself as far as getting my deer checked whenever it's time to harvest it.”
