MERIDIAN, Miss. - Over the weekend, the East Mississippi Electric Power Association says they received some reports from customers saying someone has been calling asking for immediate payment. Boles says these calls have been made over the Lauderdale County area.
“The callers are saying they are from EMEPA and that power will be disconnected if a payment is not made over the phone within the next 45 minutes to an hour," said Julie Boles, Marketing and Communications Director for EMEPA.
Boles says this is a common thing they see every few months and encourages customers to never give out their personal or financial information.
“We just want to remind the public to never give your financial information to anyone over the phone," said Boles. "Do not give them your social security number, credit card number or your banking information. EMEPA would never call our members demanding payment over the phone.”
EMEPA is not sure who is scamming their members. They believe scammers are calling at random posing as the company. If you believe you are receiving similar calls, hang up immediately and directly call the East Mississippi Electric Power Association.
