With temperatures dropping daily, heat is considered a main resource and being energy efficient in your home or business is the way to go. January is one month that brings cold temperatures and also brings high energy bills. This is the time where thermostats are at its peak to allow immediate heat.
“It is not uncommon for us to see some of the highest energy bills in the winter months when it’s cold. As temperatures drop, heating systems are working harder than ever to keep our homes in a comfortable temperature.”
Boles says it’s a good time for consumers to take a look at their home or business to see where they can be more energy efficient.
“Such as caulking around their windows and doors--making sure that their doors are properly weather striped. Then it’s simply things like opening your drapes and your blinds in the daylight hours to allow the sun to come to warm your home and close them in the evenings to trap in the heat.”
Using space heaters is one thing that can cause fires during winter months. Boles encourages the use of safe judgement on these types of appliances.
“Keep space heaters away from blankets, curtains--things that can catch on fire. They need to make sure they are being safe in their decisions.”
The East Mississippi Electric Power Association provides winter energy tips on their website.
