Extreme Heat effect on crops in the peak of Watermelon Season.

Meridian, MS - “We had such a cool May, then the first part of June stayed cloudy, but now all of sudden summertime has hit we got plenty of sunshine and stuff is moving right along, it’s kind of speeding things up.” Says Randy Mathis, who is the co-owner of Mathis Produce.

After the record breaking extreme hot weather from last week, Randy feels the heat wasn’t that bad on the produce market. “You know it’s not unusual to have a week in the summer of some 100-degree temps, I see now we’re starting to get some rain again, temperatures are cooling back off a little bit so everything seems to be running fairly normal.”

Among all the farm grown produce, Randy has noticed a great demand for watermelon. “Actually, it’s been a pretty good year for watermelons. It’s peak time for this area right here around the fourth of July and they’ll continue all the way till frost really, October, November, they’ll still be available. “

So, what does the price of watermelons look like? “Right now, a big watermelon retail will run Ten or Twelve dollars, so for this time of year that’s a pretty good price.”

Mr. Mathis says we are in the peak time of watermelon picking season, which is perfect for consumers looking to grab watermelon.
