East Mississippi Connect announced they have begun installing fast fiber internet in homes in the Vimville area of Lauderdale County. This fiber internet connection is powered by East Mississippi Electric Power Association. The fiber comes after a 6 million dollar grant through the Cares Act in July.
Customers within the East Mississippi Electric Power Association service area can pre-register online for service. This will also let customers know what one out of five phase plan the company is in which will be built in approximately five years.
“It really started back in January 2019. That’s when Mississippi Legislatures passed the Mississippi Broadband Enabling Act, which allowed for electric cooperatives to begin even looking at the possibility of providing such a service to our membership,” said Director of Marketing/Communications Julie Boles. “Once COVID-19 hit our area, it really emphasized the need for this service and it pushed the opportunity even faster to get that service out to our membership.”
Their goal is to provide service to at least 275 customers by the end of this year.
