In Decatur, the Newton County Veterans Office and the American Legion Post 89 is set to start a food bank for veterans and their families in the Newton County area.
“The idea was brought up to me to start a food bank. One of our veterans from Newton County-his daughter lives in Michigan. She decided to take the project on-went back to Michigan and contacted her church and local friends and they kind of adopted us,” says Newton County veteran officer, Johnny Reeves. “They’ve been donating food. They brought a trailer load of food down a few months ago and they’re bringing another trailer this fall.”
The food bank is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 11th from 11AM to 1PM. The food bank will be open every second Saturday of every month.
