Today, senators announced legislation to make Juneteenth a widely observed holiday that marks the federal order to free slaves.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day and many others, highlights the ancestors that paved the way for African Americans to freedom.
“Especially in today’s climate, today is super important," says Tykia Watts. "It gives black people a reason to remember where we came from as well as how much further we have to go.”
Although, with some of the constant inhuman circumstances African Americans still sometimes face, people are still asking where is their respected freedom. The recent murder of George Floydd has left thousands of Americans furious and they continue to protest for equality.
“After 400 years we’re still kinda fighting for basic civil rights, basic human rights and I think that though we’re allowed to walk around, we’re allowed to vote. We need to take advantage of those opportunities. So we can continue to propel our own platforms and our own motives because there isn’t anybody promoting our motives.”
As of today, Juneteenth will be classified as an official holiday.
