Getting a head Start on the Future

The need for skilled trade workers has been in high demand lately. Meridian Public and Lauderdale County schools are encouraging their students to get a head start in the industry.

Studies show that 62% of firms are currently struggling to fill skilled trade positions. Baby boomers have been the dominant group in this industry and currently make up the majority of skilled trade workers, but as they get older the need to fulfill those positions is getting harder.

Ninth graders toured thirteen career and technical education (CTE) programs at the Ross Collins Career and Technical Center.

Garyeon Timmons, a 9th grader interested in the web and concept program, expressed his excitement about the program.

“I look forward to learning how to develop my own website and create my own thing that people love. I can share my interest with other people and my beliefs”, said Timmons.

The different programs including culinary, automotive, construction, and others have students getting hands-on with their future. Assistant Director, Matt Johnson told us why the tour of the center is so important for the students.

“It’s extremely important to get our kids involved in the trade”, said Johnson. Trades are what our community needs right now in various areas such as construction, welding, and automotive industries. We’re taking time to speak to these young 9th graders so they can make a decision about their future careers.”

Students in the program can receive up to two college credits before graduating high school. The 9th-grade students will pick what specific program they will study this upcoming spring.
