Gov. Reeves announces new ReSkill MS initiative to assist those economically affected by COVID-19

Governor Tate Reeves has announced the launch of a new initiative called ReSkill Mississippi. This plan is set to help ease the economic crisis COVID-19 has caused.
“Hundreds of thousands of people have been laid off during this pandemic. Countless of Mississippi employers are struggling to make ends meet,” says Gov. Reeves.
This initiative is funded by the Cares Act which the total amount results in $55 million. With these funds in place, Mississippians are able to receive skills training to get better jobs. These trainings will be available at Mississippi Community Colleges.
“It actually came about by the House Bill 1795, which gives all the community colleges various funds for the purpose of workforce training," says Vice President of Workforce Solutions at Meridian Community College Joseph Knight. “We have three hours of credit that certify as short term, which are our HCA program, healthcare assistance, EMT basic program and our truck driving program. They can do credit route that way or they can take numerous short term course through the workforce development building.”
In order to participate, those interested have one semester to complete the trainings.
“It is time sensitive. The legislator put some stipulations with funding so this will be offered for this semester at this time. All the funds have to be spent by the colleges by December 18th. This is our deadline for us to have this information back to Twin Districts.”
