Gov. Reeves says signs of economic growth seen across the state during the pandemic

During Governor Tate Reeves' recent update on COVID-19 in the state, he addressed the status of the state’s economy.

More than 4,700 unemployment claims were filed in the state of Mississippi during the week of September 19, which is almost 200 more claims filed in the state than the week before.

Despite these numbers, on Wednesday, September 23, Governor Tate Reeves stated during his update on COVID-19 in Mississippi, that the state is still seeing signs of economic growth during the pandemic.

“I just asked our friends at the Mississippi Development Authority for a rundown. We’ve recruited $732.97 million in capital investments in our state in 2020, with over 2000 new jobs being brought to our state”, said Gov. Tate Reeves.

Governor Reeves stated that this year’s economic growth in Mississippi is thanks to businesses across the state being able to reopen, although other states across the country remained shut down.

“We’re not immune to the economic troubles of the time, but as Mississippians, we’ve been able to withstand them, because we’ve refused to let the panic overcome our priorities. We can only get through tough times like these if people have the security and the pride of a new job or a good job for fair pay, and despite the tremendous upheaval we’ve been working overtime to make that happen,” said Gov. Reeves.

Hoping to further drive economic growth across the state, state officials are continuing to promote the ongoing workforce training initiative, called ReSkill Mississippi, which targets workforce training for Mississippians whose jobs have been impacted by the pandemic.
