On Monday, June 8, Mississippi saw the highest number of positive coronavirus cases reported in one day from the Mississippi State Department of Health, with 498 COVID-19 cases reported, totaling the number of positive cases reported in the state, since its first case on March 11, to 17,768 cases.

“The thing that we’re seeing now that’s driving transmission is people out and about, younger folks are getting it, this is also compiled with almost like a disbelief that coronavirus is still an issue and I assure you and want to assure the doubters that coronavirus is still a real threat in Mississippi ,not only because its still percolating and can increase at any time, but we are seeing deaths, we are seeing the impacts in our community when it penetrates into those who are older and more vulnerable”, said Dr. Thomas Dobbs, State Health Officer.

He also stated that wearing a mask is important to further mitigate the spread of the COVID-19.

“Other things to think about from a community perspective is what impacts it had not only on your, but on your community, we know the majority of the people that are contagious are asymptomatic, and that’s why the masks are so important. Its not so much about you and its not a personal decision, but if you’re asymptomatic and walking around and you breathe it into the environment, you’re going to infect people and not know it. You may never know it, because you were never symptomatic enough to manifest symptoms to get tested" , said Dr. Dobbs.

The Mississippi State Department of Health continues to update the number of COVID-19 cases reported each day with test results from the previous day.
