LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. - Hurricane season is quickly approaching and staying aware is key. The Mississippi gulf area endured about 8 hurricanes back-to-back in 2020 and LEMA Director Odie Barrett says we can possibly see that again this year.
“We’re looking at having another high volume this year," said Barrett. "Hopefully not eight, but they are predicting a possible of at least five to ten storms that could possibly affect our area.”
Barrett says any storm on the westside of our local area can do more damage than the eastside. He says staying prepared is always important for uncurrent times, especially having plenty of food and water.
“We want to make sure our medications are in order," said Barrett. "Any of our insurance papers, recorded papers and even a little bit of cash is good to have.”
Barrett says the season can begin sooner than later due to the number of outbreaks from last year. He says June 1st is ideal, but May 15th could possibly begin the season.
“Conditions are favorable. Our cities are not as hot as they were this time last year which is a good thing, but they are still warm and hopefully we’ll have a relaxed season this year, but we still wanna plan for the worst," he said.
