People in Quitman came together to stand against racism and social injustices. Saturday, July 11, was the unity march and empowerment program event. The event was sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of the Pine Belt and concerned citizens of Quitman and Clarke County. The group marched from Sumrall Park to the Clarke County courthouse, where there were guest speakers to help deliver the message of the “Black Lives Matter” movement and the opportunity for attendees to register to vote.

“Coming out here, is to support what they are doing, supporting the movement, you know. Like, they say that black lives matter --all lives matter too though, but we’re just trying to give people a peace of mind in the community with all that’s going on in the world right now,” said Geovante Carter, participant of the unity march in Quitman.
Organizers of the unity march in Quitman were also promoting another unity march and peace rally that is scheduled to take place in Laurel on Saturday, July 18 at 8am, beginning at the J.C. Penney’s parking lot, and will end at the Jones County courthouse.
