The approach of the new school year is right around the corner and the Lauderdale County Public Schools are running short on bus drivers. With there being currently two open positions available. Let’s find out how exactly would a shortage of bus drivers affect students returning this school year.
“We are needing bus driver’s primary at two locations. We have three positions open at west Lauderdale Elementary and two at Northeast Middle School.”
If by the start of the school year and enough bus drivers aren’t attained Moore explains how they will go about handling the situation.
“We are working on trying to get some temporary individuals in their to help fill those routes, if not we are going to have to go to another measure which in the past what we have done we go into the habit of having to double route which means kids won't get to school quite on time or in some cases they may have to leave early.”
The state of Mississippi requires 5.5 hours of instruction time per day across all grade levels and because of the bus shortage that would interfere with students learning.
“That is the last resort that is not what we want to do. We understand that academic time is precious, but at the same time, dire situations call for dire measures. We are going to do our very best to take care of all of our students.
Moore states that all who are interested will have to go through the procedures for obtaining their commercial license and a bus card to be valid for the state of Mississippi. If you would like to apply for a bus driver position or more information you can call 601-485-0849 and ask for Tim Moore. Donisha Branham Twin States News Meridian.
